Simonsbath Festival presents Opera Anywhere and their Amahl and the Night Visitors – a Christmas Opera for the whole family!
Many of you will have enjoyed Opera Anywhere’s productions of Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance at St Luke’s Church, Simonsbath.
Written by Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) in 1951, such is the popularity of Amahl and the Night Visitors, that it has been performed more than 2500 times worldwide. The opera tells the story of a lame shepherd boy who gives his crutch to the Three Wise Men as a gift for the Christ child.
An Italian by birth but living most of his life in the U.S.A., Menotti wrote his fist opera at the age of twelve and gained wider popularity than any other composer during his lifetime. His works are mostly in English, using traditional harmonies, making them particularly accessible to Engish speaking audiences. In 1958 Menotti also founded the annual summer music and opera festival held each June to early July in Spoleto, Italy.
Opera Anywhere have toured with Amahl and the Night Visitors on at least 30 occassions since the late 1990s. One of the atractions of Menotti’s operas is that they work well with piano accompaniment making them suitable for performance in more intimate spaces in true ‘chamber opera’ style. As their name suggests Opera Anywhere specialises in performing in new and unusual venues but they are also very familiar with theatres, churches and festival locations. Opera Anywhere frequently collaborate with schools in their performances and Simonsbath Festival’s performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors will include young people from Dulverton School as a integral part of the opera.
